THE MALIGNANT MESOTHELIOMA EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SURVEILLANCE SYSTEMS IN EUROPE (Workshop Roma 4 dicembre 2009.)

Occupational exposures are currently responsible for the vast majority of asbestos-induced cancers in industrialized countries.

There is a need for epidemiological surveillance systems, in order to monitor the
incidence of mesothelioma and its course over time, to study the proportion of
asbestos exposure attributable to occupational origin, and to improve the
pathological diagnosis.

Mesothelioma surveillance programs exist in different European countries, some being at the national scale, such as in Italy, or in France. However, all do not rely on homogeneous methods.

The workshop wants to recognize the different experiences active in Europe, to define common objectives and methods looking at a future European surveillance
cooperation….
